The project:
Our backyard was a steep, unusable slope which was great for erosion but useless for two young girls who wanted somewhere to play. I excavated over 60 tonnes to carve it into three level tiers, linked by timber steps and even a slippery dip from Bunnings built straight into the slope of the garden bed to connect two grassed tiers. On the top tier I built an outdoor kitchen with an open fireplace, added new garden beds and repainted the fence. Around 90% of materials came from Bunnings, keeping it genuinely budget-conscious.
- Materials:
Timber, concrete, paint, top soil, tools many to lost them all. Let’s just say I knew every isle of Bunnings very well by the end of it.
- Tools:
Garden tools, battery powered hand tools, painting tools, tape measures, levels, wheelbarrow, buckets all purchased from Bunnings.
- Step 1:
Created a plan and 3D model in Sketch Up after measuring the space. Plotted the space with line marking paint and braced myself for the big dig.
- Step 2:
Excavated the terraces and footings with a skid steer, dingo and shovel. Learnt how to mix and pour concrete footings to start laying blocks for retaining walls.
- Step 3:
Built retaining walls and steps making progress much quicker now that the yard was more accessible.
- Step 4:
Laid turf, added soil to the garden beds, planted natives and dug in the kids slippery dip.
