Kitchen from a disused workshop space

The project:

I reimagined a disused workshop as the heart of my home-a spacious, owner-designed kitchen that blends traditional farmhouse charm with modern elegance. Using gloss white Kaboodle cabinetry as the foundation, I handcrafted ash timber benchtops and shelving from Bunnings hardwood timber, with the warmth of the timber beautifully complementing the gloss white cabinetry. A handcrafted splashback created from pressed tin panelling, brushed brass tapware and hardware, polished concrete floors and a Tiffany-style pendant light complete a warm, welcoming kitchen that I love coming home to.

- Step 1:

Step 1 – Transforming the space

I reimagined a disused workshop into a spacious kitchen area, removing old fixtures, preparing the room and creating a blank canvas for the new design.

- Step 2:

Step 2 – Preparing the room and surfaces
Completed plasterboard work, repairs and finishing, including applying joint compound, sanding surfaces and preparing the walls and ceilings for painting.

- Step 3:

Step 3 – Installing the kitchen framework
Installed Kaboodle cabinetry to create the foundation of the new kitchen layout. The kitchen was carefully planned and designed using my own drawings and refined with Kaboodle’s online kitchen design tools. Plumbing and electrical work required for the new design was completed by licensed trades to ensure everything was safely and professionally connected.

- Step 4:

Step 4 – Creating custom timber features

Crafted ash hardwood timber benchtops and shelving from Bunnings timber products, carefully measuring, cutting, sanding and finishing each piece to complement the cabinetry.

- Step 5:

Step 5 – Painting and creating the colour palette

Painted the walls, ceilings and finishes, combining crisp white cabinetry with the warmth of natural timber to create a bright yet welcoming space.

- Step 6:

Step 6 – Installing fixtures, fittings and appliances

Fitted the farmhouse sink, brushed brass tapware, cabinet handles, rangehood and appliances. Final plumbing and electrical connections were completed by qualified trades.

- Step 7:

Step 7 – Creating the feature splashback
Transformed pressed tin panelling into a unique splashback feature, adding character and blending traditional design elements with a modern kitchen aesthetic.

- Step 8:

Step 8 – Adding lighting and finishing details
Installed lighting, hardware, trims, skirting, architraves and finishing details, including the cavity sliding door and other elements that completed the space.

- Step 9:

Step 9 – Styling and bringing the design together
Added the final touches to balance functionality, warmth and character, creating a kitchen designed to be lived in and enjoyed.

- Step 10:

Step 10 – Completing the transformation

Finished all final details, cleaned and styled the space, transforming the former workshop into the heart of my home.

This is an incredible transformation. Taking a disused workshop and turning it into such a light-filled, welcoming centrepiece for your home is a remarkable achievement.

Retaining the structural columns and beams, then tying them into the rest of the room through the layout and paintwork, was a fantastic design choice that preserves the character of the original space.

The handcrafted ash benchtops and shelving are real highlights and bring so much warmth to the gloss white Kaboodle cabinetry.

The pressed tin splashback, farmhouse sink, brushed brass fittings and Tiffany-style pendant light all work beautifully together, giving the kitchen a distinctive farmhouse feels without losing its clean, modern finish.

You have created a kitchen that feels highly personal, beautifully designed and fantastically finished.

I'm especially grateful that you noticed the original structural beams and posts. Keeping them exposed was a very deliberate design choice because I wanted to preserve some of the home's history and character, rather than hide it. Seeing that recognised is incredibly rewarding.

I'm also so pleased you liked the handcrafted ash benchtops and shelving, and the combination of the pressed tin, farmhouse sink, brushed brass and Tiffany-style pendant. I spent a long time trying to balance traditional charm with a clean, modern feel, so it's lovely to hear that came across.
