The project:
I renovated the front of our old sandstone home to restore its character and create a welcoming entrance. The original windows and timber had weathered over time, so I stripped, repaired, and refinished them instead of replacing them. I wanted to preserve the home’s history while improving its appearance with a limited budget. The project was driven by a love of DIY, a desire to learn new skills, and the satisfaction of bringing an old home back to life for my family.

Cabot’s water-based clear varnish to protect the restored timber
Posts that are where the wall once was.
From sand paper, timber filler, primer and exterior paint, scrapers, Paint rollers to brushes.

- Step 1:
- Cleaned and assessed the front of the house and fence.
- Stripped old paint and finishes from the timber windows and trims.
- Sanded all timber surfaces to prepare them for restoration.
- Repaired damaged timber and patched areas where needed.
- Restored damaged sandstone and mortar around the front façade.
- Primed the timber to create a long-lasting finish.
- Painted the trims and restored the home's original character.
- Restored the front fence by repairing, preparing, and repainting it.
- Applied a protective clear finish to the restored timber and sealed gaps around the windows.
- Completed final touch-ups, cleaned the site, and admired the transformed front of the
home.
