Upcycled craft cabinet using furniture parts

The project:

Using the hutch of an old desk that has been in storage and an old set of drawers I transformed these into a beautiful, whimsical craft cabinet to store all of my supplies for other creations. I love the bright colour and bold handles. I love knowing I’ve created something truly unique, something I can be proud of and a superstar piece in my home for years to come!

- Step 1:

Remove hardware and drawers, sand using an orbital sander and a sanding block for those hard to reach places. 

- Step 2:

Added a hardwood panel for under the hutch and nailed in the hardwood moulding with 45 degree angles for a neat finish

- Step 3:

Filled all the nail holes and dents with Woodfill 

- Step 4:

Sanded and cleaned off all dust and debris again

- Step 5:

Primed using a spray primer then lightly sanded and re-dusted

- Step 6:

3 thin coats of British Paints Furniture paint, light sand and dust between each layer

- Step 7:

2 coats of British Paints Furniture Top Coat with roller. Left to cure fully. 

- Step 8:

Created a template for screw holes and measured out and marked on each drawer

- Step 9:

Screwed in the handles and cleaned the glass

What a clever way to combine two unused pieces of furniture. The hutch and drawers now look as though they were always intended to be together, and the added hardwood moulding gives the cabinet a neat, finished appearance.

The Riverland Blue paint and gold handles make it a real statement piece, while the different drawers and compartments should provide plenty of practical storage for craft supplies.

Thank you for sharing such a detailed step-by-step guide. This is a wonderful example of giving old furniture a completely new purpose.
