The project:
Replace Existing Picket Fence with new Vertical Sleeper and Steel Mesh Fence, that provides separation between the front yard and street naturestrip, whilst still providing an open feel to the street frontage. The choice of materials and finish provides a low maintenance solution. That allows weathering to add to the character of the fence. Sleeper elements to consist of 3 grouped together

- Step 1:
Setout String Line along fence line. Measure out fence vertical sleeper spacing. Set each spacing to the middle sleeper.
- Step 2:
Dig each middle sleeper footing 300x300x600 deep. Ensure footing does not encroach any title boundaries
- Step 3:
Instal each 1800 long sleeper into each post hole so that the sleeper is embedded 600mm and extends 1200 above ground leve. Set each sleeper with it’s out side face lined up with the string line. Concrete each sleeper into the dig footing hole. Use a spirt level to achieve vertical level.
- Step 4:
Create a jig that enables spacing between vertical sleepers, utilise a sleeper off cut on its side with a fence paling secured to the side face.
This can be used to achieve a 75mm gap between vertical sleepers
- Step 5:
Cut your sleepers so that you will achieve an 1100mm height and 1000mm height above ground level. Measure 175mm to either side of each middle vertical sleeper, and dig your 300x300x600 deep footings, centred to each 175mm measurement.
- Step 6:
Install each of your cut sleepers to your dug footings, utilising the jig you have made, this will provide a 75mm gap between each vertical sleeper. Install so you have a combination of 1000mm, 1100mm and 1200mm high vertical sleepers in each group of 3. Ensure each sleep is level vertically. Allow concrete to set.
- Step 7:
Measure between each vertical sleep and cut each fence Plinth so that it spans from internal vertical face to internal vertical face. Prep the timber and paint with a minimum of 2 coats. Once completely dried, fix the plinth to the inside face of vertical sleepers using 50mm screws. Ensure the plinth is set 20mm above the ground surface.
- Step 8:
Using your bolt cutters cut the steel reinforcing mesh so that it is 800mm high (4 squares high) and the length to the nearest vertical upright bar so that there are full squares within the reinforcing sheet. Install each fence panel fixing them to the inside face of the vertical sleeper utilising screen brackets and 50mm screws
The main part of the fence is finished
- Step 9:
Install new sleepers to the position where you want your letter box. Space them according to the width of the letter box. Dig 300x300x600 deep footings, concrete each vertical sleeper, ensuring each sleeper is vertically level. Allow the concrete to set
- Step 10:
Install the letter box. Fixing it to the inside face of each vertical sleeper. Add your solar fence rail lights to the top of each middle sleeper. Add your street number to your sleeper in the chosen position.
