Exterior painting improvement

The project:

Painting all the balustrades, hand rails, trims, round post knobs and window sills white. The Cosy Cottage was a three toned house with light grey weatherboards, momentum dark grey trims and white. We decided to freshen it up Hampton’s style using just a 2 tone colour palette - and removing the dark grey.

Some Queenslanders feature the matt dark grey because of the dust, but if you use a gloss it washes away easy.

In the before and after photos, you will notice the big difference this makes brightening the house up, all the grey was drab and dark. We also renovated the deck, removed all the hideous paving bricks and layed some lush green Sir Walter Buffalo grass - previous to painting the exterior. This was a very economical project and effective transformation.

- Materials:

• 2-in-1 undercoat
• Weathershield White Gloss
• Painting equipment
• Drop sheet
• Clean up rags

- Tools:

• Orbital Sander

• Small paintbrush (for the cut in)

• Large paintbrush

• Ladder

- Step 1:

1. Lightly sand all the painting surfaces first
2. Apply 2-in-1 undercoat and leave it to dry
3. Apply 1st coat of white gloss
4. Apply a light 2nd coat of white gloss

Switching to a two-tone colour scheme has really brightened the home and gives it a classic Hamptons-inspired look. It's a great example of how a thoughtful paint update can make a significant impact without requiring a major renovation.
