Girl's blue bedroom makeover

The project:

Gabriella’s bedroom started with 70s damaged walls covered in dents, holes and old patch repairs. I repaired every imperfection, sanded the walls smooth, and transformed the space with Dulux Nambucca Heads at 75% strength for a soft, calming backdrop (after trying about 7 different samples from different brands!) I finished the room with simple, long rectangular moulding boxes to add timeless character and emphasise on the cozy and elongated character while giving a feeling of height. I painted everything for a seamless look. Every material was sourced from Bunnings, creating a beautiful bedroom that’s elegant, cosy and perfect for a growing little girl, with her favourite colour :)

- Materials:

Dulux Nambucca Heads paint (75% strength)
Dulux primer/sealer
Timber moulding trims - Bunnings 15mm
No More Gaps gap filler
Selleys Spakfilla
Sandpaper (various grits) 180 200 220
Miter saw
Paint rollers and roller sleeves
Paint brushes (monarch were my favourite)
Painter’s tape scotch blue
Drop sheets!!
Paint trays
Liquid nails selleys
Various samples of paint

- Tools:

Measuring tape

Mitre saw (or mitre box and saw)
Nail gun or hammer
I used a 10cm piece of wood to be able to measure perfect distance between rectangles
Caulking gun
Putty knife
sanding block
Spirit level
laser level - however I found that I was better off with the 10cm wood piece
Paint roller frame
Paint brushes
Pencil

- Step 1:

I cleaned the walls with hospital grade disinfectant and Shelley sugar soap liquid, Removed all existing nails and shelves from previous owner, repaired all holes, filled, and repaired damaged wall areas.

- Step 2:

I sanded all the walls again and again, refilled and sanded until smooth (definitely the least favourite step)

- Step 3:

I started measuring my mouldings and trims rectangles specifically to have three on each wall and be scaling with the room, calculated the best size of trim to also match the scale

- Step 4:

bought mouldings and cut all of them the right size with 45 degree angles

- Step 5:

I fixed all the mouldings according to measurements and previous crayon planning on wall, with the liquid nails and tape

- Step 6:

I sealed all the gaps with no gap sealer :) this was sportive! But I actually loved this step as I could the the trims take shape

- Step 7:

I lightly sanded the finished mouldings and the existing skirtings, also added some wood filler to some tiny areas and sanded

- Step 8:

I then painted all the walls and trims with the Dulux primer!

- Step 9:

I then painted all the walls in Dulux Nambucca heads 75%,

and painted the trims and the skirtings in semi gloss Nambucca heads 100% to give shape relief and even more interest to the mouldings

- Step 10:

I then had some happy tears as the colour was even more beautiful than thought, we installed all her little toys and a nice light carpet, and bed.

We have the best time in this room, the colour and mouldings makes it really relaxing and special day and evening.

Gabriella's bedroom is absolutely beautiful. The soft blue palette, elegant moulding details and seamless finish create such a calm and welcoming space, while the thoughtful design gives the room timeless character that will grow with her. It's wonderful to see the care that went into every step, right down to finding the perfect shade of blue. If you have any photos of the room while it was being renovated, we would love to see them as well.

Thank you so much for such a lovely welcome and for your incredibly kind words! It truly means a lot.

This room was such a special project for me and for our family, having waited for a long time to find a house that would be ours and could become us as well. I couldn’t wait to physically see all the ideas I had come alive, and this was my very first project, I wanted our daughter to really enjoy this transition so she also helped and learnt lot in the process!

Seeing Gabriella’s face when she walked in made every it so worthwhile! I’ll definitely upload some renovation photos too: the walls were in pretty rough shape to begin with, with lots of random nails, shelves and repairs. Other rooms also had wallpaper where the steamer rental from Bunnings became my favourite tool! Its nice to look back and see just how much it transformed.

We’re so grateful to Bunnings for having all the materials and inspiration we needed to bring the vision to life and becoming my personal Disneyland and weekly escape. I can’t wait to share more projects with the Workshop community, we are still working on the house room by room and sharing on Instagram when I am not working. Our current phase is the garden which has been everyones favourite!

Additionally, did I go through the right steps for this project to be part of the DIY Project 2026 competition? Hopefully yes! I only saw the magasine yesterday after picking up some soil 😀 Many thanks, and kind regards.

Just one additional tip: I used a cloth (towel type for more grip) and a hot water bucket during the application of trims with liquid nails, and again during the caulking, to remove straight away any excess around the trims. I didn't start out this way and it cost a lot of time to remove the excess, as opposed to removing the excess straight after each application.

Now that room has totally changed! What an improvement :) Love all the photos of how it unfolded, It makes me want to go work on my rooms :) (Yeah I have a rule, one inside the house project at a time) You have really brought the room up to a modern style.

My rule is -

one backyard project
one front yard project
one inside project for rainy days when I cant work outside.
If a project is large and impacts usage of a space then it gets bumped up the priority list.

These actually keep me in line and gives me space when a project grinds to a halt due to lack of resources or its a hard to figure out part.

I will definitely stick to this from now on, yes this is the reason why these shelves got bumped ahead of my top 3 😫, really looking forward to this one this weekend, and to unpack all the puzzles in there!
