The project:
Front picket fence at my daughters home, on top of well engineered half brick wall, using bolted posts and picket panels made off site and fitted between posts, we wanted to retain the old brick wall as it is so well made and solid and seemed such a waste to demolish and start again. Design we used was so panels and posts could be made and engineered off site and then taken to the wall, fitted a little like kaboodle/ ikea furniture 😂
- Materials:
Treated 70x35
Treated 90x35
Treated 150 palings
Treated 140x75 posts
Galvanised screws, paint, glue
Galvanised masonary bolts
Kwikset concrete
- Tools:
Ozito cordless drill, cordless sander, cordless brushless grinder, as well as a collection of handsaws and chisels
- Step 1:
Lots of measuring, especially the posts which we made off site and took to site
Posts were made from 70x35 treated timber with 150 palings attached to secure the panels too, the paling allowed the reach over the brick to the edge of the wall, it was lighter and seemed to secure the panels well.
Once posts were in place measured for each panel with pickets and made off site, took each panel to the wall and screwed in between posts,
Glued and bolted the 140x75 treated posts together, two for each gate post, then sank them into the concrete drive with 3 bags of kwikset concrete,
Made the gates off site using mortise and tenon joints, no screws in the main gates, just for the bracing and fixtures
