Japandi-style platform floating bed

The project:

I wanted a japandi-styled floating bed for my bedroom. However, nice ones cost upwards of 2000$ and is not exactly the design I was looking for. Hence, I decided to make my own in a design that I actually liked.

- Materials:

These are the materials I used:

• (140 x 19mm 2.4m Pine) x 2
• (140 x 19mm 1.2m Pine) x1
• (140 x 30mm 2.4m Pine) x 2
• (140 x 30mm 1.2m Pine) x 2
• (30 x 12mm 1.8m DAR Tasmanian Oak) x 2
• Leftover bed slats from old bed frame, or you can get some timber from bunnings like "this" and cut it to the required size for your bed slats.
• 25mm timber screws
• 50mm timber screws
• Lightstrip

- Tools:

These are the tools i used:

• Hand saw (I used a mitre saw I already had).
• A drill
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Rafter Square
• (Clamps) x 4
• Pocket Hole Jig

- Step 1:

• Measure your mattress or just check according to your mattress size. My mattress size is king single so it is 2030mm x 1070mm.
• I will use the 30mm thick pine as the bottom frame and I want to leave 10mm gap between the frame and the mattress.
• So I will cut both of the (140 x 30mm 2.4m Pine) to 2080mm [2030mm + 30mm + 10mm(bottom gap) +10mm (top gap)]. The logic is length of mattress + thickness of pine + desired bottom gap + desired top gap.
• Both of the (140 x 30mm 1.2m Pine) to 1120mm. (Same logic as above, width of mattress plus thickness of wood, plus desired bottom gap, plus desired top gap)
• Cut both of the (140 x 19mm 2.4m Pine) to 2080mm.
• Tip: Use Rafter Square to draw straight lines on the pine boards.

- Step 2:

• Using a Pocket Hole Jig drill pocket holes into both the (140 x 30mm 2.4m Pine) and one of the (140 x 30mm 1.2m Pine) which will go on the feet side of the bed. Make sure not to drill all the way as we will be using screws not dowels to secure the boards onto the frames.

- Step 3:

• Assemble all four 30mm thick pine into a rectangular shape for the bottom frame.
• Make sure it is in the same orientation as shown in the drawings below otherwise the dimensions used to cut the timber will not work.

- Step 4:

• Using the 50mm timber screws, drill and connect all of the boards together to secure the frame.

- Step 5:

• Using the Clamps, secure the cut 140 x 19mm 2.4m Pine board onto the frame and drill through the pocket holes using the 25mm timber screws.

- Step 6:

• Drill the 2 side floating boards into place first and then measure from one side of the floating board to the other side of the floating board.
• Cut the (140 x 19mm 1.2m Pine) to that exact measurement

- Step 7:

• After cutting, screw in the bottom floating board with the 25mm timber screws.

- Step 8:

• Clamp the 30 x 12mm 1.8m DAR Tasmanian Oak to the bottom of the frame and drill it in on both bottom side of the frame with the 25mm timber screws.

- Step 9:

• Insert the lightstrip under the floating platforms.
• Put in your bed slats from your old bed frame or cut some timber to size and use it as bed slats.
• I put it diagonally because I did not measure the bed slats before making the fame. Learn from my mistake and make your frame according to the size of the bed slats you plan on reusing. Or you can cut down the old bed slats to size if you do not mind.

- Step 10:

• Put your Mattress on to the frame.
• Turn on the Lightstrip.
