My 13-year old daughter wrote this about her handmade planter
My project began with some trailer wheels my dad was working on. I placed a piece of timber through the holes to create a movable platform I could stand on. As I built it, I realised it looked more like a bench. Near the end, I decided it resembled a planter instead. Since I’ve been growing pineapples in my backyard and on my kitchen bench for the past few months, I thought a movable planter would be perfect. Adding the wheels let me easily move the planter the find the best sunlight, and this is my final result

- Step 1:
using the 2 by 4s measure 4x 800mm and 4x 500mm lengths then using the 8 pieces make two rectangles for the top and bottom of the planter
- Step 2:
With the rest of the 2 by 4s make 6x 265mm lengths for the inside supports and 2x 265mm and 2x 255mm for the posts to go through the wheel and to support the wheel posts. With these pieces screw the wheel post on opposite sides on the short side. Then flip the top over and screw the supports to the underside of the side posts leaving 100mm till the end of the wheel posts (see picture for reference). With these pieces screw 6 pieces that you cut before line them up with the corners and centre of the two rectangles to create a rectangular box.
- Step 3:
using the cladding make 14x 340mm lengths and 2x 250mm shorter pieces for under the wheel joints. Then going around the structure clad the outside of the frame using the shorter pieces for under the wheel joints leaving 30mm on each longer side for the frame pieces.
- Step 4:
with the last bits of the 2 by 4s create 4x 345mm lengths with a 20mm by 15mm notch on the short side corner (using photo for reference). Then with your black paint, paint all your corner frame pieces and the wheel joints making sure to tape the parts of cladding around the joints to prevent any paint getting on it.
- Step 5:
with your decking treated pine and black Japan varnish and stain evenly apply a layer of stain following the directions on the product. Once the stain has dryed cut 2x stained decking pieces at 1000mm lengths and 2x 540mm lengths at a 45 degree angle to create a rectangle.
- Step 6:
To finish your planter use 3 wood screws on each corner frame to secure. Finally using 2 wood screws on each end secure the top stained pieces making sure there is a even hangover on each side
