The project:
My daughter and I took on a DIY project when we found a beautiful old small cabinet perfect for her many special miniatures she receives from Grandma's garden fairy. We were both keen to get started and living very close to Bunnings has its perks. We often take her pet chicken there with us to shop and buy baby chinos. This project took 4 days and my daughter was ecstatic with the results.

- Step 1:
1. My daughter and I stumbled across a beautiful vintage children's cabinet painted very sloppy blue. We decided to bring it home and give it a DIY makeover.
First thing we got started on was scraping all the old paint off. We got as much as we could with the scraper multi tool.
- Step 2:
2. While my daughter Lucy was at kindergarten I completed the next step with the Poly stripper. It only took one thick coat brushed on and an hour later it scaped of super easy.
- Step 3:
3.Next we sanded and sanded some more till all the gorgeous hard wood was back to its glory. We even found an original clown illustration under the paint on the plywood backing.
- Step 4:
4. Cleaning and Staining were the next steps. I scrubbed the wood with steel wool soap pads and then cleaned the whole piece with a microfiber cloth and clean water. After 24 hours drying I applied one coat of the Maple stain and varnish on all hard wood and allowed another 24 hrs drying time.
- Step 5:
5. Going back to Bunnings so we could pick out some finishings like new knobs and something to cover the plywood with. Lucy and I with the help of her pet chicken ( Snowball) picked out some sparkling crystals knobs and some tropical leaves contact paper that I thought would be easy to install
- Step 6:
6. I cut out the tropical paper to the same measurements as the 4 cubbies and the 2 sliding panels . I made sure everything was dust free and stuck them all on like giant stickers, using my scraper multi tool to make sure all the corners were attached well. It only took one roll and I had
some spare.
- Step 7:
7. Attaching the new crystal knobs was simple . I poked a hole threw the vinal where the previous nobs were and Lucy helped me screw them in the small space.
- Step 8:
8. I painted the original blue hooks that we removed with Gold spray paint. One coat on each side.
- Step 9:
Last but not least we glued a few polymer clay ladybugs i had sculpted and painted.
- Step 10:
All finished super happy with the results and ready to fill with special things
