How to achieve consistent colour when staining different timber?

Hi, I'm jumping into staining a table a nice colour to match my apartment. Its this cheap, fb marketplace table but its the perfect size for my kitchen… just the wrong colour.

So the original stain looked like this, and the differences between the tones just became more and more obvious as I sanded it off.

My inspiration for this was a dark, more neutral, and consistent brown.

Kind of like these other acacia furniture images I found.

Is the wood colour too contasting to achieve a similar look? Does anyone know a way to even the tones out in the final look?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about staining timber.

The timber panel you currently have is called a finger jointed panel. These are timber pieces that have been chosen for their strength and finish and are mechanically joined together with high strength timber glue and possibly biscuit joints. Because they come from different parts of the tree you get variations in the finish which is unavoidable. there are exceptions of course, but it depends on the manufacturer.

Using a light stain will not cover up the differences between the timber tones. Some actually prefer this and they use a clear sealer instead to actually highlight the different tones and textures of the wood. A light stain will slightly cover up the differences, but the dark toned pieces will still stand out.

Taking the next step of using a darker stain will provide you with a more uniform finish. As you add more coats the darker it will get, you may still see a little bit of the dark toned pieces, but it now begins to blend in and does not stand out so much.

Stepping outside the box you also have the option of a liming white finish using https://www.bunnings.com.au/feast-watson-500ml-liming-white-stain_p1564621 or go for a high gloss plain finish such as the https://www.bunnings.com.au/bondall-250ml-clear-gloss-monocel-timber-varnish_p1520507 . I suggest visiting your local store and have a look at the stain and varnish sample board in the paint department. Make sure to bring your timber sample piece if you have one and speak to the paint specialist about possible stains that can go on it.
