The project:
Our backyard was previously unfinished and lacked a functional layout, making it difficult to enjoy or entertain in. Our goal was to transform it into a practical, inviting outdoor space where family and friends could gather comfortably. We also wanted to incorporate a grassed area to provide a softer, more versatile space for relaxing and everyday use. The finished renovation has completely changed the backyard into a functional and welcoming extension of our home.

- Step 1:
We started by removing all of the existing plants along the back fence. While they were well established, they didn't suit the layout we had planned and needed to be cleared so we could extend the deck and create a more functional outdoor space. Rather than letting them go to waste, we sold the plants on Marketplace so they could be enjoyed in someone else's garden.
- Step 2:
The original timber deck was too small and not functional. We carefully dismantled it, removing all of the timber and selling it on Marketplace so it could be reused rather than ending up in landfill. After obtaining the necessary permits, we extended the deck all the way to the boundary wall to maximise the entertaining area. We chose Ekodeck Ironwood composite decking for its durability and low maintenance, and my husband installed every board himself using the 3 mm fastening system.
- Step 3:
With the deck complete, we turned our attention to the remaining backyard. We removed the watertank, then jackhammered and removed the concrete slab underneath. We also dismantled the old shed, sold it on Marketplace, and removed the concrete slab beneath it too. With everything cleared away, we gave the fence a fresh coat of paint to cover the sections that had previously been hidden, leaving us with a clean slate for the landscaping.
- Step 4:
Once everything was removed, we dug out all of the road base gravel and loaded it into a skip. We then brought in three tonnes of sandy loam soil and gypsum to create the perfect foundation for a healthy lawn.
- Step 5:
With the ground prepared, we laid the turf and hoped all of our hard work would pay off. Watching the backyard transform from gravel into a lush green lawn was one of the most rewarding moments of the project. We also used a tile insert cover to still allow access to the storm drain.
- Step 6:
My favourite & final part was adding the finishing touches. We chose comfortable outdoor furniture and décor that turned the backyard into a warm, welcoming space that's perfect for relaxing or entertaining family and friends.
From start to finish, the project took around two and a half months to complete. As we both work full-time and regularly work away from home, every evening, weekend and day off was spent bringing our vision to life. We genuinely couldn't have completed this transformation without Bunnings, where we sourced the materials, tools and finishing touches needed every step of the way.
