The project:
I transformed our dated cream and maroon kitchen into a bright, modern space entirely through DIY using the Dulux Renovation Range. While the kitchen had great bones and plenty of storage, its outdated finishes made the space feel dark and busy. Wanting to save money and reduce our environmental footprint, I primed and painted every cupboard and tile to completely refresh the space rather than replacing it.
Brushed gold handles replaced the existing silver ones and we have also ordered a brushed gold brass tap to replace the existing silver one. Unfortunately, it didn’t arrive before the competition closed.
The overall cost of this makeover was about $1000 for the paint, paint accessories, handles, new rangehood and tap.

- Step 1:
I worked in ‘sections’ of the kitchen so we weren’t completely without space. To start the process, I used Selley’s sugar scrub to clean each surface I was working on followed by a light sand. Once dry, I started priming.
- Step 2:
I waited the required time for the primer to dry before I went in with the first coat of paint. I waited a day before going in with the second coat. As the cupboards were originally cream in colour, I painted them twice.
- Step 3:
After priming the benches, I went in with the first coat. The benchtops required three coats since they were originally dark in colour.
- Step 4:
I slowly started assembling the cupboards and attached them once they were dry and primed the tiles. It was so exciting seeing the primer over the tiles because it already made such an improvement in terms of the overall look.
- Step 5:
Finally, I assembled everything from the corner bench after pulling it apart and painting it. I absolutely love how this kitchen makeover has turned out!
I hadn’t considered painting it initially and thought we would need to do a complete kitchen renovation.
I am so happy this is the outcome because it’s a fraction of the cost and it’s given our kitchen a new lease on life.
