The project:
Chicken coop 2.4m x 1.2m & Yard 4.8m x 3.6m built to house up to 10 chickens using both new and recyclable materials with 2 water catchment drums added to rear of yard to be used for water for the chickens and nearby veg/herb patch.
- Materials:
Materials used: New and recycled Timber 90x45, 70x35, Predator Proof Mesh 12mm x 12mm squares, merbau Timber for trim, recycled colourbond roofing sheets, centre clear poly carb panel, recycled rustic roof sheeting, recycled 300mm x 300mm pavers, rapid set concrete, Door hardware, mud guard washers, button head screws, bugal head screws & tek screws.

Tools used: Post hole scissor shovel, long handle shovel, gorilla trestle, Syneco combination ladder, Ryobi - compound saw, replicator saw, impact drill, drill, jigsaw, sander, circular saw, Ozito grinder, Stanley tape measure, Drum Trolley, Spud Bar, Combination square, level, Drill bits, hole saw, spade bits, pliers, cutters, chalking gun, paint rollers.
- Step 1:
- Level Ground, add pavers and concrete main poles
- Step 2:
- Construct framework - using recycled and new timber and paint
- Step 3:
- Clad chicken coop inside and out
- Step 4:
- Install predator proof mesh to framework using mud guard washers and button head screws to secure the mesh & Place predator proof mesh in trench around the outside of the coop/run 400mm deep and cover with dirt.
- Step 5:
- Add Roof sheeting & foam corrugated infill strips as well as the recycled rustic roof sheeting to bottom section of run to prevent chickens kicking out sand and detour predators from trying to access the run
- Step 6:
- Built poop shelf and roosting bar inside coop as well as ramp up to shelf to allow chickens easy access to roosting bar. Added Synthetic Turf to ramp to make it easy for the chickens to walk up. Nesting boxes made from storage containers/cut for easy access for chickens.
- Step 7:
- Added window for ventilation on the outside of coop using merbau and predator proof mesh
- Step 8:
- Built Dutch door using recycled French door - removing glass and putting in predator proof mesh & install Dutch door with hardware.
- Step 9:
- Awning build over door to coop/run with rain a small gutter and rain chain
- Step 10:
- Installed a Gutter to back side of run and water drums to use for water for the chickens and watering the veg/herb garden nearby.
