- Step 1:
Measure the size of the wood you want for the bench seat and the desired height. I chose 1800mm wide as this was the exact width of the of the window.
- Step 2:
Get the amazing team at Bunnings to cut your wood to size. As I used one 2400mm panel, I had off cuts which used for another small project. I had two cut, one for the top and the bottom.
- Step 3:
Cut your middle panels to the desired height. Add pocket holes using a kreg jig. Ensure to pre-drill to stop the wood from splitting. Add the amount of wood for cubbies you would like. Secure with wood glue.
- Step 4:
Cut a curve from the top and bottom to create the curved bench seat. Connect the top to the shelves and put on the back panel. Ensure to sand all edges and corner to be as smooth as possible.
- Step 5:
Add a strip of wood for the bookshelf and secure with wood glue and screws.
- Step 6:
Add a cushion on top and cover with material. You could stain, paint or seal this. I chose to leave the wood unfinished.
- Step 7:
Finished bench seat and one happy boy. I added a cushion which is removable for the days he wants to use it as a stage. It creates a perfect amount of easily accessible book storage.
- Step 8:
Use the left over wood for the magnetic wall panel. Fix this to the wall using screws for security. I attached a roll of paper for art days.
- Step 9:
To create the bookshelf running across the wall I mounted wood cut to size along the entire back wall and fixed these to the studs. I also attached marine grade plywood to wood and then drilled the panel wood into these for extra stability. I added led strip lighting that is perfect as a nightlight too.
- Step 10:
I painted with a delux paint sample I picked up for a bargain of $2, followed by another sample paint almost the exact same match as the wall. I finished by adding a small door with a push light with a remote as a secret place for my son to store his figurines. I attached a black box using gorilla duct tape. I also fixed a basket to the plywood as extra storage.
