The project:
With a growing family our pile of shoes and bags have been overflowing and a sight for sore eyes as soon as we enter the house. This project has helped us find a place for everything giving us an organised and functional storage unit with space to grow. It currently features ventilation for all those sports shoes and pram parking which we can convert to more shelving down the track.

- Step 1:
Measure and cut plywood panels for sides and shelves using your circular saw. For longer cuts a straight edge or saw guide can be used to ensure straight cuts. For those bigger panels this can be done on the ground on top of a sacrificial sheet of old material or stock.
- Step 2:
Using the pocket hole jig, mark out and drill the pocket holes for the shelves, tops, and bottoms. Depending on the depth of your shelf you may need 2 or 3 each side.
- Step 3:
Mark out the location of the ventilation mesh on the side panels and cut using the jigsaw. Sand smooth the edges and rebate the back side of these cut-outs using a router to fit the mesh panel cut out and glue in.
- Step 4:
Paint the cabinetry panels with primer and 2 coats of desired paint colour before assembly for easier painting. Plywood edges can be hidden using a thin coat of wood putty prior to painting.
- Step 5:
Assemble the cabinetry using pocket screws ensuring to clamp and square panels prior to screwing as pieces tend to move during assembly.
- Step 6:
Measure and cut timber for bench seat and tabletop and glue together using PVA and clamps. Bench seat can be supported with either sandwiched plywood panels or the waterfall effect can be achieved by using longer starting pieces and mitreing one end with the circular saw before glue up.
- Step 7:
Assemble bench seat and tabletop and sand smooth. Any gaps can be filled with the wood putty or small gaps can be filled by applying a small amount of finishing oil and sanding with 120 grit sandpaper.
- Step 8:
Apply the finishing oil to the bench seat and tabletop top using a microfibre cloth, roller, or brush and wipe away excess.
- Step 9:
Attach the bench seat and tabletop to the cabinet using screws from underneath the tabletop and from the side of the bench support.
- Step 10:
Cut away skirting and cornices using the multitool and slide the cabinet into place. Fix the cabinetry to the wall studs using screws through the back supports and side panel. Use caulking gun to fill any surrounding gaps.
