The project:
We undertook a total makeover on our 1970's built 2-bedroom rental unit in Ferndale, Western Australia. The unit was very tired with original tiling and fixtures in most rooms, including a roman bath in the bathroom. We completely gutted the entire property and started from scratch, giving the property a fresh, modern look & feel, with the help & advice of our amazing Kaboodle in-home consultant Jacky!
- Materials:
Bunnings was our 'go to' for most of our renovation materials, including:
Paint: Walls - Dulux interior 'wash & wear in 'Beige Intent' (half strength) & Dulux Aquanamel in 'Macaroon' (to match cabinetry) for the doors, skirting & trim.

Having taken on a few previous DIY Projects, we did not need to purchase any additional tools, but were regular (sometimes daily) visitors to Cannington Bunnings Warehouse for all of our hardware needs during the reno.
- Step 1:
- Living Room (before & after): Removed & replaced flooring, prepped & repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings & window treatments.
- Step 2:
2. Kitchen (before & after): Removed & replaced flooring, prepped & repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings & window treatments, replaced kitchen cabinets & benchtop, installed new appliances & induction cooktop / rangehood, upgraded sink & tab ware, re-modelled pantry & installed slider door into laundry.
- Step 3:
3. Laundry (before & after): Removed & replaced tiling & added splashback, prepped & repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings, installed laundry cabinets & benchtop, adding a lot of extra storage space.
- Step 4:
4. Toilet (before & after): Removed & replaced tiling, repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings, installed new modern Toilet.
- Step 5:
5. Main Bedroom (before & after): Removed & replaced flooring, prepped & repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings & window treatments, added a Built-in Wardrobe.
- Step 6:
6. Bathroom (before & after): Removed roman bath & created walk-in shower, added floor to ceiling tiling, prepped & repainted walls & ceilings, updated light fittings & added bathroom heat lamp, installed new Vanity, shower head & mixer, tapware & matching Caroma accessories and circular mirror.
