The project:
The existing laundry was ready for a transformation, with the goal of creating a more functional and considered space that flowed seamlessly with the adjoining kitchen. The room was stripped back and thoughtfully rebuilt with custom cabinetry, natural timber elements and handcrafted details. By continuing the same finishes, materials and design language used throughout the home, the laundry has become a cohesive extension of the kitchen while still maintaining its own personality.

Preparing the space for transformation
The existing laundry was stripped back, removing the previous finishes and fixtures to create a fresh foundation for the redesign. The original aluminium window was replaced with a sash window, bringing additional character and allowing the room to better complement the traditional elements throughout the home. The walls were plastered, prepared and painted before the new finishes and cabinetry were introduced.

Creating a seamless connection with the kitchen
Being positioned directly beside the kitchen, the laundry was designed to feel like a natural continuation of that space. A cavity slider was introduced to allow the rooms to open together, creating a stronger sense of flow between the two areas.The cabinetry, timber benchtops and tiled flooring were carefully matched to the kitchen and bathrooms, while the white ceramic drop-in sink complements the farmhouse-style kitchen sink and continues the home's timeless palette.

Designing functional custom cabinetry
The laundry cabinetry was designed and installed using Kaboodle cabinetry, incorporating pantry storage, base cabinets and a custom timber benchtop. The timber benchtop was carefully cut, shaped, sanded and finished with Feast Watson Hard Wax Oil before the opening was created for the ceramic sink.
To maximise functionality, a drawer unit was incorporated between two pantry cabinets, topped with a matching benchtop and finished with a Tasmanian oak dowel rail to create a dedicated steaming and hanging area. Above the dowel rail, a custom MDF arch was designed and installed as a subtle architectural detail, introducing one of the home's recurring design elements into the laundry while adding softness and character to the cabinetry.

Adding handcrafted details and continuity
The laundry was finished with the same attention to detail carried throughout the home. A custom curved timber shelf with gold brackets was created to add both storage and visual interest, while a pressed tin splashback introduced texture and linked the room back to other feature elements throughout the house.Rather than allowing the remaining pressed tin to go unused, a framed section was created and displayed above the washing machine, extending the feature detail throughout the room and creating a deliberate connection between the two areas.

Completing the laundry transformation
The completed laundry combines practical storage with handcrafted details and timeless finishes. Through the use of matching cabinetry, timber elements, ceramic finishes, gold accents and consistent flooring, the space now feels like an intentional extension of the kitchen rather than a separate utility room. It demonstrates how even a smaller functional space can be carefully considered, beautifully finished and seamlessly connected to the wider home.
