The project:
Well keeping this as short as possible my partner moved into a unit in March of this year. There was an original but quite ugly fireplace with a 2 door cupboard put into the original opening.We decided to create a new fireplace but had ti build this over the original as did not want to destroy something that was 100 years old. We consequently bought a British Fires New Forect 870 electrical fire and created a new surround out of limestone. Also added our old 52 inch TV and created a hidden cupboard for the internet modem. 🤣.

- Tools:
Makita drill, sander, grinder diamond blade disk. Scrapers, circular saw, tape measure, levels . Wet n dry vacuum. Square set. Compact drill.
- Step 1:
Removal of the old cupboard that was in the previous fireplace.
Mark up the new design with tape showing where the fire will be positioned.
Build casing out of the original cupboard to house the British Fires electric fire.
Throughout the whole process ensure that the 100 year old original fire is left in tact, consequently the new fire is built around this.
- Step 2:
Chase electrics from behind the original cupboard to up inside the chimney and reposition both the outlet for the tv and the outlet for the internet.
- Step 3:
Using two pieces of charcoal porcelain, create surrounded for fire by cutting to size and applying glue.
- Step 4:
Build fireplace surround shape using 70 x 35mm fiber cement sheeting.
- Step 5:
Cut limestone by hand and stick onto the fireplace shape. Built a wooden hoist to hold the top tiles whilst the glue set. Used buff grouting.
- Step 6:
Built upper chimney breast from 70 x 35 mm pine. Built recess for TV plus small cupboard on chimney breast side to house internet modem.
- Step 7:
Plaster and sand upper chimney breast using finish coat compound.
- Step 8:
Cut limestone for shelf/ mantle of fireplace and position and glue in place.
- Step 9:
Paint upper chimney breast front using Dulux Silver Tea Set and sides of Chimney breast in Dulux natural white to match walls.
