How to restore and repaint metal window frames?

Hi!

I would like to refresh the finishing on my metal window frames. Maybe 85% is pretty good, but I have noticed chunks of paint coming off in patches and cracks forming around the join between window and wall.

Some frames are very close to the wooden window ledge and flaky, others have a groove inbetween glass and metal frame with chunks missing on the inner edge.

Some seem to have a clear sealant around the edge, others do not.

My concern is where the chunks of paint have fallen out, black mould has started to grow.

Is there a way to patch where the end result is a smooth surface and not uneven from painting on top? or if i just repaint, it would cover and smooth the patch indents?

Also not sure how to prevent mould in the rims….

Any advice on a good result without redoing all from scratch would be the dream.

Hi @mooglett,

It sort of depends on the condition and location. For example, there's no real way to apply a filler to a corner that will last long term. I'd just give them a light sand with some 180-grit sandpaper to remove the sharp edges, apply primer and then paint them.

If they are on the face of the metal and there is an obvious depression where a layer of paint has chipped away, do the same by sanding them, but you should then apply a small amount of filler to the gap to fill it flush with the paint, sand it, then prime and paint. As long as it is not completely bare metal, then you should be fine to use something like this

If it is bare metal, then I would suggest priming it first, allowing it to dry, then applying your filler, sanding, priming and painting.

thank you so much for your advice. Any ideas about the chunks of paint coming of the metal frame? These pics show it in some, but have these small bits that have flaked off on most windows.

i would love to get them back to smooth looking white frames.  Do you recommend to just paint over the frame to regain a smooth finish and the paint will kinda filly them in or i need to patch the bits and pieces then repaint?

if i need to patch first any recommendations in product? thank you again!
