How to fix wall with shadows after painting?

Hi

We recently removed a chair rail from a lounge room wall so as to install a couple of bookshelves. This left a middle part of the wall needing to repainted. The handyman filled the gaps with plaster and said it was ready to be painted.

This was pretty much my first time painting (at least inside the house). I cut in near the aircon, the skirting board and 2 bookcases. I then used a roller to do the rest. Unfortunately, as you can in the photos, there is unseemly marks going down one part of the wall and under the aircon. If anyone could let me know what is did wrong, and how do I fix it? It looks fine during the day, but at night it looks particularly bad.

Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the Bunnings workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your painting question.

It appears that the paint did not latch on properly to this section of your wall. I propose sanding the patchy surfaces with 240grit sandpaper and wiping it clean with https://www.bunnings.com.au/parfix-sugar-soap-wipes-50-pack_p0517073 . Once the wall dries up, I suggest adding another coat of paint to that particular section. I recommend a minimum of two coats for the entire wall. Allow the paint to cure and see if any other imperfections are visible.
