Console tables from upcycled Baltic Pine desk

The project:

Found an old desk on the sidewalk, asked permission to take! Wanted to up-cycle to make it a lovely furniture piece. After cutting the lower legs off, I found I could make two consol tables out this one old fashion desk. Was a little challenging but fun to get it done. Both pieces look OK!

- Materials:

40x40dressed pine- legs. 225 X 2400 pine, cut in half, dowel joint/liquid nails, clamped overnight. Screws, sandpaper, sample pots, Feast Watson hard wax. Marble/gold drawer pull

- Tools:

I use. Ozito: 3 drills,1X for drill bit. 1X for screw bit 1X for counter sink bit. 2 X sanders. Bench Drop saw. Set of Chisels. Paint brushes and rollers.

- Step 1:

Wiped the dirty desk clean. Cut the ‘turned’ legs off at the top. attached new square legs to match, using dowel joints and liquid nails. Added cross bars to the bottom for extra strength. A lot of sanding, especially the top. Painted the lower leaving the top and drawer natural with hard wax. Instead of discarding the lower section, I decided to transform it into a more modern console table by painting it a pretty sea green and leaving the top natural with hard wax.

What a clever upcycle. Turning one old Baltic pine desk into two console tables is a great save, and I especially like that you kept the tops natural while painting the bases. The sea green finish with the timber top gives the lower section a really fresh look, and adding the cross bars was a smart way to bring strength back into the new leg structure.

It’s also fantastic that you asked permission before taking the desk and then found a use for both sections rather than letting any of that timber go to waste. The gold drawer pull is a lovely finishing touch.
