Timber and resin dining table

The project:

This is a melaleuca timber dining table with a resin pour and welded steel frame base. The resin pour is to resemble a creek with gold flake nuggets hidden in the resin.

- Materials:

Legs

• 50mm x 50mm RHS
• Dulux Metal Shield Satin Black paint

Table Top

• Natural edge timber slabs
• Diablo belt sanding paper 40 & 80 grit
• Diablo orbital sanding paper 120 - 400 grit
• Wet & dry sanding sheets 400 - 1200 grit
• Timber screws
• Deep pour resin (poured in 1cm layers)
• Feast & Watson Scandinavian Oil

Connecting Top & Legs

• M8 timber button head screws

- Tools:

Legs

• Ryobi metal drill set
• Ryobi step drill
• Makita drill
• MIG welder
• Makita angle grinder
• Makita cutting and grinding wheels

Table Top

• Makita belt sander
• Makita orbital sander
• Sanding pads
• Measuring cups and mixing paddles
• Lint free cloths
• Polishing/buffing wheel (to polish resin sections)

Connecting the Top & Legs

• Makita Drill
• Makita impact Driver
• Kanga drill bit extension & hex connector drill bit
• Button head screws
• Kanga 152mm impact driver bit

- Step 1:

Legs

• Measure and cut leg components
• Weld metal legs to the desired shape
• Drill holes in steel to fix top to the legs
• Paint steel legs and leave to dry

- Step 2:

Table Top

• Sand timber surfaces for desired texture and feel
• Create frame for natural edge timber slabs and resin pour
• Use roof and gutter silicone to seal edges of section to pour, this prevents resin from running
• Pour first layer of resin
• Place features on dried resin layer
• Pour layer after layer till desired height
• Sand and polish resin once dried

- Step 3:

Connect Top & Legs

• Pre-drill holes in timber, be sure to align the holes with the holes made on the steel legs
• Screw legs to timber top

You've done a terrific job combining the natural character of the melaleuca slabs with the resin creek. Hiding the gold flakes within the pour is a creative touch that encourages people to take a closer look, and the simple black steel base complements the top without drawing attention away from it.

The step-by-step breakdown and materials list will also be really helpful for members who are interested in tackling a timber and resin project themselves.
