How to install a hand-held shower head in a rental?

Hi,

I would like to add a hand-held shower head to my existing rain shower or temporarily replace the rain shower head with a hand-held one. Either option would be suitable.

As I am renting, the installation must be fully reversible, without modifying the fixed pipe or drilling into the tiles. I have attached photos of the existing shower.

Could you please advise whether either option is possible, what compatible products or parts I would need, and whether installation by a plumber is required?

Hi @hlim

There are two factors here. Firstly this is not your house and you need permission to make changes, so you have to ask the landlords permission or you could find yourself in trouble when they do a home inspection! Secondly this has to be done by a registered plumber so no matter what we tell you, its down to what the plumber is willing/able to do. The best advice I can give you is approach the landlord if you have a real need rather than a desire.

Please note that plumbing work needs to be completed by a licensed professional for safety and compliance. Any changes that involve moving or reconfiguring pipework would be considered regulated plumbing work and would need to be carried out by a licensed plumber.

I'm sorry but I'm currently unaware of a diverter piece that can fit onto an existing rain head shower set. However, there is the option of asking your landlord about upgrading the shower head set with a similar functioning product that provides the same shower function but has the handheld shower option as well. It should be advantageous for your landlord as you will be getting a plumber to install the shower head set and it will be a brand-new fitting and you get to have the shower head you are after, a win-win for everyone.
