How do I restore a cast-iron fireplace?

I have an old federation fireplace (and a sister on the other side of the wall) that I'd love to make look a little happier, but I have no idea how to restore it. I'd prefer to keep it operational in case I decide to use it in the future, but I have no plans on using it anytime soon (Already blocked it with a piece of foam to prevent draughts).

The tiles on the sides are all in pretty great condition and don't need anything, but all the black fireplace and the floor in front are obviously not in the best state.

The cast-iron insert and decorative tiles appear to be in remarkably good condition. I’d begin by carefully vacuuming away loose dust, then cleaning the cast iron with a soft brush and mild detergent. Once dry, lightly remove surface rust with fine steel wool or a small brass brush, taking care around the raised details and tiles. A traditional stove or grate polish can then restore the black finish while retaining its period character. Please be advised that this product is suitable only for exterior surfaces that do not exceed 300°C and are not exposed to direct flame.

Before disturbing any old paint or coating, test it for lead and avoid dry sanding. The hearth appears to be slate or stone with a deteriorated coating, but I’d confirm the material before proceeding. A neutral-pH stone cleaner might reveal whether it can be refinished; otherwise, a fireplace or stone-restoration specialist could advise whether sealing, resurfacing or replacement is appropriate.
