How to fix heat lamp coming out of ceiling?

Question

Hello, my ixl bathroom heat lamp assembly is falling out of the roof.

Of course the right way is to remove it entirely, have the whole patched by a plasterer and then reinstall.

* However, I’m wondering if there is a product which could reinforce the plaster which looks to be falling apart? Like a ‘no more nails’ type silastic?

2. You can see that one of the pins which is supposed to hold it in place is missing, can I buy a replacement on of those?

3. Are there draft covers for these type of heat lamps? The fan component has been disconnected as there is a separate exhaust fan installed directly above the shower.

4. Can I buy the springs that hold the cover onto the assembly?

5. What is the type of globe which goes into the assembly? (Not the heat globes, they are good, just the light globe)

Another option is to replace the fitting with a larger one that covers the hole but moves the fixings further out to fresh plasterboard edges.

Unfortunately, I don't think using an adhesive such as No More Nails is going to resolve the issue. The plasterboard around the opening has broken away, so there's no longer enough sound material for the retaining clips to grip onto. Any adhesive applied around the edge is unlikely to provide a reliable or safe long-term fix for a ceiling-mounted electrical appliance.

To repair it properly, the heat lamp unit would need to be isolated and removed by a licensed electrician. The damaged plasterboard could then be repaired, which would most likely involve cutting out the damaged section and installing a new piece of plasterboard before cutting a fresh opening for the unit.

Depending on the extent of the damage, it might actually be easier to have the electrician relocate the heat lamp to a new section of ceiling while they're there. You could then simply patch the existing opening, rather than trying to repair the damaged edge accurately enough to reuse it. That would also avoid having to organise the electrician to return a second time after the plaster repairs have been completed.

To answer your other questions:

* Replacement retaining clip: This is likely to be a model-specific IXL spare part. I'd contact IXL with the model number to see if they can supply a replacement.
* Draft cover: I'm not aware of any draft stopper designed for your unit.
* Cover springs: These are also generally available as model-specific spare parts through IXL.
* Light globe: It appears to use a standard R80-style 100W Edison Screw (ES27) reflector globe.

As this is a fixed electrical appliance, any removal, reinstallation or repair involving the unit itself should be carried out by a licensed electrician.
