The project:
Chalk art is a unique fun art project anyone can do it for feature wall inside or outdoors. This would be excellent in a child’s bedroom, lounge room feature wall, cafe, school playground - or even a camper van!
This is a custom made design I did on a core flute panel for the inside sliding door of the camper van. It captures the holiday vibes - and features Australian native flora and fauna - a Brolga bird, large florals, bees, the beach and a sunset.
First, draw a rough sketch to scale of a design illustration you like. I used real leaves for inspo too.
Prepare the surface by wiping it down. Start with a roller and 1 coat of primer undercoat, followed by 2 coats of blackboard paint. After painting each coat allow a good 24 hours to dry before drawing on the surface.
Start drawing using the white chalk. Stand back and use a leaf blower to blow the chalk dust away as you draw. Chalk art doesn’t have to be perfect, mistakes can easily be erased with a duster or small paint brush dipped in water - just lightly brush over to erase lines and touch dry.
Use hairspray as a chalk fixative in the process on the sections you’re happy with as you go along (so the drawing doesn’t get smudged).
Seal with a varnish for a permanent fixture.
Leave classic black & white or for a fun interactive urban art activity project - go gangbusters and colour it in (our group did). Be creative, have fun and I hope this inspires someone!

White & Coloured Chalk with Duster
Hairspray for fixative (so art doesn’t smudge)
Dulux Clear Satin Varnish Spray Can

The steps required to make a chalkboard art mural:
- Draw a sketch of your design to scale - pencil on paper
- Dulux primer, sealer, undercoat 1 x coat roller paint on surface
- Black chalkboard paint 2 x coats roller paint on surface allow to dry 24 hours
- Draw design on wall with white chalk
- Use hairspray for chalk fixative
- Satin Varnish spray to finish for a permanent fixture optional
- Colour in with coloured chalk and duster set optional
