The project:
Garden office with connecting gangway to main deck, with mini deck extension for BBQ and wood-fired heater all maximising use of a small backyard to create home office space separation from the main house, with entertaining space to share with friends and family.
- Materials:
Pine framing, foam installation, cement sheeting, sandstone tiles, plaster board, floating floorboards, recycled windows, OSB, lots of hardware, 200x200x40 paving jumbuck BBQ, Glow wood fired heater, colour bond steel, cabots one coat decking paint, laminated beams and spotted gum decking, silicone, gap filler,sand papper, wood glue, epoxy, diamond stone cutting disks, metal cutting discs, cloth tape, plastic and insulated wraps, saw blades, drill bits.
- Tools:
Drop saw, track saw, angel grinder, drill, driver. Quick square, measuring tape, hammer, tile trowel, collapseable sawhorse, Trimble Sketch up free drafting software, lots of clamps, ratchet straps, Stanley knife, gardening tools, levels.
- Step 1:
Measurement of the garden space to take the studio / office and cross checking with planning limitations on diy builds, sketches of the concept with pen and paper, built an architectural model with balsa wood to get a feel for the physical object and placement of windows and doors to maximise natural light, drafted in sketch up with guidance from research into building standards and advice from a friend within architectural qualifications, researched and collected materials, and construction techniques.
- Step 2:
Construction with the aid of as many freinds and family members as I could get to help as I could.
Mostly at the beginning to put up walls, but also to fit windows, cladding and roof.
The studio / office came first, the the gangway to the main deck, last was the mini deck for the BBQ.
- Step 3:
Working from home moved out of the main house into the new office / studio and then plenty of BBQs with friends and family to enjoy the new outdoor entertainment space.
