How to replace glass panel on door?

Hi all!
Our back door slammed on a windy day causing the glass to shatter! We’ve put up a bit of wooden plywood to stop the wind from coming in but we were wondering how to go about fixing it.

what measurements should we give to the glazier? How would we install it? Do we need to remove this wooden lip?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If you're not already familiar with installing glass panels in doors, I think this is one of those jobs where it's worth considering having the glazier supply and install the replacement glass for you. They'll be able to measure the opening correctly, determine the appropriate type of safety glass and install it securely.

It's not obvious from the exposed side of the door, but if you look at the other side, you might find timber glazing beads running around the perimeter of the glass panel. These are the small timber strips that hold the glass in the door and would need to be carefully removed to access the opening.

Once the old glass and any remaining fragments have been removed, the opening can be measured. Replacement glass is generally ordered slightly smaller than the opening, typically allowing a couple of millimetres clearance so the panel isn't an excessively tight fit. I'd recommend discussing your measurements with the glazier rather than specifying the final glass dimensions yourself, as they'll be able to advise on the appropriate clearance and glass type for the door.

For a traditional timber door, the replacement panel is positioned in the opening and secured according to the existing glazing method, which can involve glazing pins or small nails before the timber glazing beads are reinstalled. The exact method will depend on how your particular door was originally constructed.

Please take particular care when removing the remaining broken glass. Even relatively small pieces can cause serious cuts, and panes can fracture unexpectedly while being handled. I'd recommend wearing safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and enclosed footwear. Keep other people and pets well away from the area while you're working.

Given the risks involved and the importance of having the correct safety glass in a door, having the glazier handle the installation would be my preferred option.
