How to paint MDF backdrops with spray gun?

Hi, I'm starting an event backdrop business and have a number of MDF (MR) backdrops (plain, ripple, cut outs etc) to paint. I want to use a spray gun to prime it. I've looked at Wagner W350 Wood And Metal Paint Sprayer (based on good reviews and price point) can you advise if it's suitable to use with an oil based primer? I was considering Dulux 1Step primer sealer (oil based). The MDF manufacturer has advised i could use water based primer, as it will be easier to use with the spray gun, but I'm concerned about water absoption.

For painting MR MDF event backdrops, you’re on the right track looking at a spray system, it can give you a much smoother, more consistent finish and save considerable time when you have multiple panels to prepare.

For the primer, I’d recommend https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-1step-prep-primer-sealer-undercoat_p1370234 . It’s suitable for MDF and is a good option for sealing the surface before your topcoats. Although MDF can absorb moisture, a water-based primer is perfectly suitable when applied correctly. Use light, controlled coats rather than saturating the board, and pay particular attention to exposed edges, cut-outs and routed/rippled sections, as these will absorb more primer.

I’d pair the W350 with the water-based Dulux 1Step rather than the oil-based version, as the water-based product will generally be easier to spray and considerably easier to clean from the equipment.

The Dulux 1Step Oil Based Primer, Sealer & Undercoat can be sprayed, but for regularly priming multiple MDF backdrops I wouldn’t make it my first choice with the W350. Oil-based products involve more involved clean-up and additional solvent, ventilation and safety considerations.

For the best finish, apply a light first coat of primer, allow it to dry fully, then lightly sand before applying the next coat. The first coat may raise the MDF fibres slightly, particularly around exposed edges, this is normal. Sanding between coats will help you achieve the smooth finish you’re looking for.

Overall, my recommended combination would be Dulux 1Step Prep Water Based Primer, Sealer & Undercoat + Wagner W350 Wood & Metal Paint Sprayer. I’d also recommend testing your spray settings and product consistency on an MDF offcut first before spraying your finished backdrop pieces.

If you’re planning on spraying a high volume of full-size backdrops regularly, it may also be worth considering a larger Wagner sprayer, as the W350 is well suited to getting started but capacity and spraying speed can become more important as your business grows.
