How to fix nails popping out of external cladding?

Hi :)

I believe our external walls are painted fibre-cement weatherboard/cladding with a timber-grain profile. The cladding itself is still firm, but some of the nail heads have become exposed.

What would be the best way to repair these?

Hi @Nanne,

Just a quick safety note: if the fibre-cement cladding is older, there is a possibility it could contain asbestos. Avoid drilling, sanding, cutting or otherwise disturbing the sheets unless you know they are asbestos-free. If you’re unsure of the material or its age, it’s best to have it professionally assessed before carrying out any work that could create dust.

Hi @Nanne,

Fibre cement cladding is usually held in place with either screws or nails with a wide head, called a clout. You have clouts. Overtime, timber framing will expand and contract, which can push the clouts out of the timber slightly, so this is not uncommon and no real cause for concern.

When installed correctly, they sit flush with the face of the fibre cement, however they are always visible. If you have a look directly above and below these clouts, I am sure you'll be able to see other examples.

To drive them back in so they sit flush to the face of the fibre cement, you can use a hammer and a nail punch with a flat tip. I'd suggest this

Place the nail punch on the head of the clout and strike the punch with your hammer to drive it back into place.
