What coating & application method for European beech benchtop?

Hi, Hoping to get some advice please.

We have a European Beech timber benchtop – 2200mm × 600mm that we're using as the top for a new bar we've built for our event hire business.

Because the bar will be hired out for events, the benchtop will need to withstand regular use, drink spills, moisture, cleaning and being transported, so we'd really like to make sure we protect it properly from the beginning.

We're wondering what would be the best coating/finish to use that:

- Gives it really good protection against water, alcohol/drink spills, stains and marks

-Is durable and easy to clean

-Can handle the extra wear and tear of being a hire item

-Keeps the European Beech looking as natural as possible, without making it too yellow/orangeWould you recommend an oil, hardwax oil, polyurethane/clear coat or something else?

We'd also really appreciate some advice on the best way to apply it. What preparation would you recommend, how many coats should we do, and what tools/application technique would give us the nicest, most durable finish — brush, roller, applicator pad etc.?

If possible, we'd love recommendations for specific products and tools available from Bunnings so we can make sure we do it properly the first time. 😊

would also work well and may even be a better choice if you are going to be using it outdoors as it is UV resistant whereas the benchtop clear that I mentioned above is not.

The application process would still be much the same as I mentioned above.

I just got back from bunnings and was also recommended to use the feast Watson weatherproof varnish satin. Would you agree, that should also be good to use ?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, @cheza. It is wonderful to have you with us.

For a benchtop that needs to be hardwearing, I would favour a clear polyurethane-style benchtop coating over products like oil or hardwax oil. Oils and hardwax oils can give a beautiful natural finish and are relatively easy to repair, but a film-forming clear coat will generally provide better resistance to moisture, staining and repeated wear.

A good option would be

. It is designed specifically for timber benchtops and is resistant to stains, chemicals and oils once fully cured. Being water-based, it is also non-yellowing, which should help retain the lighter, more natural appearance of the European Beech.

I would prepare the timber by sanding along the grain starting with 120 grit sandpaper, then working up to 180 and then 240 grit. After sanding, ensure you remove all sanding dust by brushing and vacuuming the surface. Then apply three coats, allowing 2 hours drying time between each coat, with a light sand using 240 grit paper between coats to remove any raised grain and provide a smooth surface. Make sure to clean the surface to remove any sanding dust before applying the second and third coat.

I'd recommend using a high-density foam roller, applying the coating in thin coatings following the direction of the grain and bankrolling to remove any lines. Also, check your corners for drips as they need to be smoothed out while they are still wet.

You should also ensure that after the final coat, it is allowed to cure for at least 24 hours, preferably more to ensure that the coating is as hard as possible before any moisture, heat or chemicals are applied to the surface.
