How to tidy and modernise laundry?

Would love some ideas to make this space work a bit better. We keep a small toolbox in the house for small jobs, the cupboard is towels, sheets and miscellaneous household supplies. We have wall hangers for the mop, vacuum attachments and the wall cabinet is cleaning supplies

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

Before making any major changes, could you let us know what you’re hoping to achieve with the space? Are you considering a renovation with new cabinetry and a benchtop, or are you mainly looking for some better storage and organisation solutions?

If you’re keeping the existing laundry as-is, I think there are a few relatively simple ways you could make it work better. Making greater use of the wall space with additional shelving or cabinets could help. Baskets or internal cupboard organisers could also help separate towels, sheets and smaller household items. If you are open to renovating, adding a continuous benchtop and additional cabinetry could give you much more usable workspace and concealed storage. I was also thinking of replacing the old metal sink with a bench and inbuilt sink to maximise your space/storage plus make it look more consistent. It depends on how much you want to spend. As a note of warning if you do replace the bench make it a few cm higher than your existing washing machine as replacements dont all come in the same sizes.

Laundry retrofit is my laundry I did ages ago, The idea was to reuse whatever I could but make it more modern and useful. In particular have a look at the very bottom of the project and you can see my tool hutches. I have since made little trays for the tools with off cuts of timber. I will see if I can find the pics to add to the project. The slots are really handy for keeping your tools sorted. It also stops to a reasonable degree storing and forgetting :) So you could consider open shelving as this will show what you have, it can still be tidy, just not pristine :)

That kitty litter tray could be incorporated into the cupboard system so it dosnt stick out past the washing machines footprint.

Internal drying - In my laundry project I reused a slotted plastic container backing and an clothes air drier plus bench fan to dry my clothes. It works extremely well. You could use this high on the wall (You can get 1/3 sized panels at bunnings)

Last part is your lighting. If you change the lighting over it changes the feel of the room. Going from a single lamp to a LED fluorescent style will bring the room much needed brightness. You will need an Electrician to switch them over tho.

Just to add to the excellent ideas suggested, I recommend moving the cat litter either outside or in the garage on the condition that there is still space available. I would also suggest getting a small rolling toolbox cabinet to store all the tools that are currently on your laundry benchtop. If the vacuum cleaner and accessories can be transferred or relocated it will greatly help in making the laundry room not feel so full.

I suggest removing the old laundry tub and replacing it with standard kitchen cabinets. By moving the kitty litter out of the way, you regain storage space for all your laundry powder and chemical cleaners. The goal of the exercise is to move everything away from the laundry benchtop and keep it clear. This will give it a nice clean look, and everything is neatly stored.

hi Eric, our cat is indoor only so not feasible to have litter tray elsewhere

My only other suggestion is to perhaps get a smaller litter box that will fit inside the cabinet to hide it from view.

The other option is to hide it in plain site with a cabinet - https://www.bunnings.com.au/paws-and-claws-60-x-80-x-48cm-white-catsby-litter-cabinet_p0861646 . Again, you'll need to find a spot for it.

As a workaround I have seen doors on kaboodle cupboards modified (hole cut in them) so you could have a kitty litter box in a cupboard that blends with the rest of your setup.

My suggestions for your indoor furbaby would be have some type of cabinetry looking litter area to help make the area look more tidier and aligned with other cabinets. I’m actually looking at this same situation myself..future share.

I would add some type of open shelving or storage to the area above sink near window and put the clutter off the bench top into storage baskets or fabric or plastic storage and store on shelving.

Maybe attach a hook near your vac charger etc on opposite wall to hang your clothes basket on etc
