How to fix loose toilet seat?

My toilet seat shifts when used. One side the wingnut seems loose but I can't seem to tighten it.

The seat has two buttons which when depressed pops the seat off.

I am new to this and wondering if I have to replace my seat or if there is something I am missing to tighten it?

Hi @PennyH,

The one thing you are likely missing here is that after removing the seat using those buttons, the silver caps can be popped off to reveal the top of the screws. They are usually fairly loose and can be removed by hand, but if not, use a flat tool like a screwdriver or even a butter knife to gently lever them off.

You can then hold the plastic nut on the underside of the toilet, then rotate the screw from the top to tighten it up.

Once tightened, pop the silver cap back on and reattach the toilet seat.
