How to fill honeycombing on exterior concrete?

I’m wanting to fill in honeycombing that I have on concrete in the carport at my house. I want to fill it in so I can paint it. I’ll use an undercoat with sand in it so it’ll look rendered when finished.

What material can I use to fill large area of external concrete? Will need to be weather resistant and area gets sun and rain.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your exterior concrete wall.

I suggest using https://www.bunnings.com.au/turbo-500ml-concrete-bog_p0095581 to fill in the holes on the surface of your concrete wall. My best advice is to power wash the wall with a gurney to remove any dirt and mould that may have settled inside the holes. Once the wall and holes are totally dry you can then patch it up with the concrete bog. Once the bog cures you can then cover it with your preferred paint.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves and goggles.

If you were just spot filling small holes like shown in your image, the concrete bog would work fine, but if you were just looking to cover over the whole area, you'd be looking more at a render like this https://www.bunnings.com.au/dunlop-20kg-multipurpose-acrylic-render_p0760242 .

In saying this, there looks to be some efflorescence coming from the concrete, which implies there is moisture in the concrete. Is this concrete retaining soil behind it? Do you know if any water proofing has been done behind the concrete?

Unfortunately, if there is moisture in the concrete, any render, repair mortar, or paint applied to the concrete would be at risk of premature failure. It might be worth speaking with a professional renderer for their assessment and guidance, as if there is moisture in the wall, it might not be as simple as applying render then painting it.

My only thought is there's hundreds of those small holes that need need filling. Happy to spot fix but wasn't sure if something else would be quicker/easier.

I have no experience with render so would be a little nervous about rendering the whole thing but can give it a try if that will be the quicker option?

The concrete bog would in theory be the faster process as it is designed as a filler. However, it becomes impractical if there is a great deal of wall that needs to be covered. This is when rendering becomes practical.

I suggest using https://www.bunnings.com.au/uni-pro-80mm-2-in-1-patcher-scraper-80mm_p1660568 . My best advice is to not add too much activator so that you have plenty of time to work with the bog. Too much activator will make the bog dry too fast and you'll not be able to use all of it.
