The project:
This tree was planted right between a fabulous Big Red Fuji and a wonderful Apricot tree and crowding them both.
Digging it out was done on three separate days. It was rooted in rock (dried clay) under bush mulch. For about 5 years.
I’d bought a large pot and bags of potting soil. I laid a couple of half bricks and gravel as a base. Then a layer of soil. Forced the plant base into the pot curling the roots to fit into the pot. Then covered the root ball with a layer of soil and made a rich mix of Seasol about 9lt and poured it over the soil. Later I finished filling the pot and watering it heavily. I’ve located it in the sun but protected from our strong winds we get sometimes.
It’s an experiment. Fingers crossed!
I’m drying some of the cut leaves as it’s always been a healthy plant.

Actually I acknowledge this is not a masterful construction project.
But this was a major effort to dig this out, endure my wife’s death voice that I should dare to move one of her favorite plants and move it, hopefully, safely, to its new home.
- Tools:
Blood, sweat, long lever pole, shovel, gloves.
- Step 1:
Commit to myself, this is a must do project. Buy the large pot and potting soil solo.
- Step 2:
Choose the right day and time to when I could start the project.
Started by stripping the leaves and branches. Ask the neighbors if they wanted any. No takers sadly.
- Step 3:
Next keep the subterfuge going, started digging uninterrupted enough to go past the recovery point. Safely.
Ok done the essential work. Then oh dear, I was discovered. First level discussions followed.
- Step 4:
Several major discussions followed over the next two weeks.
Final steps today, I got it out, set-up and moved as the photos show.
Let’s see if this works.
Otherwise, I’ll have to buy a replacement, won’t I? 😉🙀🤠
