the plastic crumbles and the metal frame around the glass is coming off, not sure where to get these old type of plastic fittings or put it together

It's likely that it can be repaired or the damaged components replaced, depending on exactly what has failed. However, I wouldn't consider this a D.I.Y. repair due to the risks involved with working around glass and the specialised nature of the framing, rubber and other components used in these systems.
I'd recommend contacting a local glazier or shower screen specialist for assistance. They'll be able to inspect the screen, determine whether replacement parts are available and advise whether repairing the existing frame or replacing the screen is the better option.
