How to kill winter grass?

This winter grass grows higher and faster than the rest of the lawn. It is very tough to pull out manually and has bulbs at the bottom of it. It seems manual removal is too difficult. Would any chemical solutions work without killing the rest of the lawn?

Hi @Shane,

Would you be able to show us a photo of the bulbs at the base of the weed? If it were standard winter grass, a winter grass killer should remove it, although unfortunately it can also affect surrounding lawn if sprayed over the area.

Since you mention bulbs, I suspect you might actually be dealing with onion weed or something similar. If so, I'd recommend using Zero with a Zero Weeding Wand to carefully apply the herbicide directly to the tips of the weeds. This allows you to target individual weeds without spraying the surrounding lawn.

When using herbicides, make sure to follow the product instructions and wear the recommended PPE, including gloves and eye protection.

That is what I always recognised as onion weed. Looks like @MitchellMc has given you some great advice.

I'd go with the Zero and apply to the tips of the weeds @Shane. That does appear to be onion weed.

I'd agree that those bulbs do suggest it is onion weed, which is notoriously hard to hand weed as it just regenerates from the bulbs that are left in the ground.

Thanks guys. I’ve certainly dealt with onion weed before, which I identify as having a thicker stem and a very noticeable onion smell when you pull them out. Could this just be a different variety? It is very thin like grass and no onion smell. Does it matter? I assume the Zero would kill anything it touches?

No, it doesn't really matter @Shane. Everything that has a bulb typically needs to be dealt with in the same way and that is with direct applications of a herbicide.
