What top coating for outdoor painted balcony?

Hi Bunnings experts. I'm hoping you could recommend a clear top coating for a recently painted external balcony. In our area we get a lot of cockatoos and their nails scratch the paint job, so im hoping some sort of top coat will help protect the paint. Thank you in advance for the help! - Krystal

Do you happen to know what type and brand of paint was used on the balcony? That will be important, as any clear coating would need to be compatible with the existing paint.

There aren't many clear protective coatings designed simply to go over exterior paint, and adding one won't necessarily make the surface significantly more scratch-resistant than the coating that's already there. There are potentially specialist clear coatings available, but these are generally designed as part of particular coating systems or for use over specific compatible paints. A substantially tougher option would typically involve a specialised polyurethane or two-part coating system rather than just adding a general-purpose clear coat, though I am not aware of any.

You might find that bird-deterrent measures are the better way of preventing the cockatoos from damaging the surface in the first place.
