Hi all, I am looking to buy a wooden pizza peel for my home oven, while looking I had a thought of making my own pizza peel. Is there any kind of wood that's recommended? Or any other advices would be welcomed. Thank you.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @yogesssshhhh. It is wonderful to have you with us and many thanks for your question on making a pizza peel.
Making a pizza peel falls a little outside the usual realm of home D.I.Y., so I think you'll need to do some research into whether this is something pizza enthusiasts commonly make themselves. You might find documented projects or guides that will help you determine suitable timber species, thicknesses and overall dimensions.
There are also a few important details you'll need to consider. For example, whether the peel can be made from a single piece of timber or needs several boards joined together, how those joints should be constructed, and whether any adhesive used is suitable for food contact. You'd also need to investigate whether the timber should be left untreated or whether there is an appropriate food-safe finish that can withstand the temperatures and conditions around a pizza oven.
Personally, I haven't come across any established guides or recommendations for making your own pizza peel. By the time you've purchased suitable timber and other materials, a pre-made peel might also be the more cost-effective and straightforward option.
However, if making your own is something you're passionate about, I think it could certainly be a worthwhile project. I'd just recommend doing some research specifically into pizza peel construction before selecting your materials. Whilst researching, you might like to check out our wide range of pizza peels online. If you haven't got any pizza stones already the https://www.bunnings.com.au/matador-330mm-pizza-stone-stacker-set_p3171328 would be a great set. You can raise the cordierite stones up to a really high temperature, perfect for those crispy bases. Let me mention some of our members, @NatV13, @paul_hughes, @ccinbris and @HD1, that have contributed pizza-related projects in the past to see if they have any thoughts. Please let me know if you have any questions.
