How to hang sheer curtains from ceiling?

I am wanting to update curtains in my living room and install sheer/softer curtains. I’m planning to install these from the ceiling however it’s not clear in the picture the ceiling is an old popcorn style. Is this still possible and if so what products would be best? For reference the area I’m looking to cover is approximately 5.4m in length. Thank you!

Hi @chaitea,

Yes, it will certainly simplify things.

You could then use more standard wall-mounted curtain rod brackets, such as these Pillar 16/25mm White Adjustable Universal Brackets. They suit either 16mm or 25mm curtain rods and can be adjusted out from the wall between 70–90mm.

You can also have a look through our range of curtain brackets if you'd prefer a different style or need a bracket with greater projection from the wall.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be curtain rods that are 5.4m long, however you could certainly use two different curtain rods side by side to achieve the desired length. The only caveat to this, is obviously that you would need to use two separate curtains sliding outwards from the centre.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

I think your best option would be to move away from a curtain rod and use something like this Zone Interiors 280-500cm White Idaho Cord Drawn Heavy Duty Expanding Curtain Track. It is designed so it can be top fixed directly to the ceiling, with the pulley housings and centre supports attached to the ceiling.

Unfortunately, it only extends to 5m, so it won't cover the full 5.4m span you've mentioned, but it is the best option I could find. You would have around 200mm uncovered at either end if it was centred in the space. Hopefully that would work for you.

Ideally, you would want to position the track so the fixings can be screwed directly into the ceiling framing. This is going to give you the strongest and most reliable installation, particularly over such a long span. The popcorn ceiling won't really be an issue as the screws will go through it into the framing behind. You can use a

Where fixing into the framing isn't possible, you can use suitable plasterboard ceiling anchors like these

, but I'd only use these where absolutely necessary. If your curtains are particularly heavy, I would be even more inclined to ensure the track is fixed predominantly, if not entirely, into the ceiling framing. This could mean altering the ceiling framing to suit.
