The project:
Jack Decided he wanted to try and make a spatula from reclaimed timber. Then we tried making wooden spoons as well.
- Materials:
Reclaimed untreated timber.
Sandpaper 80, 120 and 240 grit
Foodsafe timber oil - lemon scented
- Tools:
Pencil and permanent marker
Jigsaw
Handsaw
Shapeshaver Tool
Rasps
Vice
Power Sander
Power Rotary tool
- Step 1:
First we experimented with different tools to shape the spatulas and spoons.
We used makeshift Rasps from things in the workshop, wrapped in sandpaper held in place with double sided tape.
A flat rasp from a scraper wrapped in 80 grit sandpaper.
A rounded rasp from a peice of dowel wrapped in 120 grit sandpaper.
- Step 2:
Our makeshift tools worked well for a trial and with very soft wood, but we purchased a Shape Shaver and set of Rasps from the Bunnings Tool shop which meant we could try out some harder timbers.
We decided to use a powered rotary tool to carve out the divets for the spoons.
- Step 3:
After we had achieved the shapes we were after, we got stuck into sanding. We discussed which sandpaper we needed to use first and made a sandpaper block for the flat sections. 1st we used 80 grit, then 120 and lastly 240.
- Step 4:
Once we were happy with the smooth finish, Jack rubbed some lemon scented Foodsafe timber oil onto each peice. Then they were ready to be gifted.
- Step 5:
They look, feel and smell great.
