How to fix gap between verandah floor and facia board?

Hi all, can you help me please? I have a upstairs outdoor veranda, I think the floor is like particle board or something like that. There is a small gap between where it ends an d the fasic timber on the front of it. what should I use to fill the gap, I plan to paint it once the gap is filled.

How wide is the gap?

How long is the gap?

Is it vertical or horizontal?

Is there any variation in height between the two materials?

Is it a corner?

Without seeing it, I am thinking along two lines, either an outdoor rated filler such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/sika-300ml-white-sikaflex-11fc-purform_p0628965 or a treated timber trim such as this https://www.bunnings.com.au/18-x-18mm-5-4m-moulding-h3-treated-pine-fj-primed-quad-losp_p0052849 , but it all depends on details.

When we can see what you are working with, we can certainly offer more specific advice around product, technique and method of installation.

Thanks Jacob. I dont have a photo at the moment. Is the front of the front of the house. I can answer the questions. One is 3.8 horizontal from one end of floor to the other. The opening is only approx 5mil. Its on the edge of the verandah, then a facia board buts up to it The other is only 3 mil on the walkable area of the floor. I need to be able to.paint the floor.

For a gap of around 5mm between the edge of the verandah flooring and the fascia board, I’d be inclined to use a flexible, exterior-grade sealant such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/sika-300ml-white-sikaflex-11fc-purform_p0628965 rather than a rigid filler. Being an outdoor verandah, there will likely be some movement between the flooring and fascia, and a flexible sealant is better able to accommodate this without cracking.

For the 3mm gap within the walkable floor area, I’d first want to establish exactly what the flooring material is before recommending a filler, particularly as you intend to paint over it. If you can take a photo when you get a chance, including a wider shot and a close-up of the gap, we should be able to identify the flooring and recommend a suitable paintable repair. However, there's a good chance that the Sika product would work there as well.

Apologies for the delay. The gap is on the floor, were the top over the verandah meets the board across the front. And at the join on the floor

TThe previous Owners had blue tape and painted over it. Can I use waterproofing tape the paint over it?

Thanks for the photos, @miraperry . They make the situation much clearer.

I wouldn't recommend using waterproofing tape and then painting over it. The tape is likely to remain visible through the finished coating, and it's not really intended as a finished trafficable surface.

For that joint, I'd still favour removing any remaining tape and loose material, thoroughly cleaning the area and then filling the gap with a flexible exterior-grade polyurethane sealant such as Sikaflex 11FC. The flexibility is important as the two sections can move independently, which appears to be why the previous owners used tape over the joint.

Once cured, the Sikaflex can be painted over. I'd avoid trying to completely disguise the joint with a rigid filler, as movement is likely to cause it to crack again.

Before repainting the entire verandah, I'd also make sure the existing coating is well adhered and suitable for recoating, particularly where the old tape has been removed.

Apologies @miraperry, I'm not quite sure what you meant by your last message. If you're asking whether bathroom gap filler is the same type of product as the Sikaflex we've mentioned, no, it isn't.

I'd stick with the Sikaflex 11FC for this application. It's designed to provide a durable, flexible and watertight seal, which is important in a verandah or balcony situation where preventing water ingress is essential.
