Hi, The bottom of our doorframe next to shower has started to rust. What's the best way to fix this? Thank you!
Hello @ginger_cat_handyman
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your rusty door frame.
I suggest doing an integrity test to see how far the rust damage has travelled. I recommend using a flat head screwdriver and pushing it into the rusty surface of the steel frame. If the screwdriver head pushes through and travels deep into the frame, odds are the rust has eaten right through the body of the door frame. I therefore suggest engaging the services of a professional to cut and patch weld the rusted sections of the steel door frame.
However, if the screwdriver stops at the surface of the frame, it's safe to conclude that it is just surface rust and can be repaired. The basic steps are to sand the rusted surface back to metal, then apply Bondall 250ml Ranex Rustbuster Rust Converter. I recommend using the Dulux 300g Metalshield Steel Primer Spray Grey and then for the topcoat the Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Gloss Spray Paint White to protect the surface of the steel frame.
Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you @EricL. The screwdriver stopped at the surface of the frame. Would you recommend using a streel brush?
Hi @ginger_cat_handyman,
That's a good sign that the rust is only surface level, which is fantastic to hear because it makes things much easier.
Yes, a wire brush would be a good next step to remove the heavier rust. You could then give it a light sand with some 120-grit sandpaper to remove as much of the finer rust as possible before applying a converter, priming and spraying.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
