How to treat gardenias with limp, brown and curling leaves?

My two gardenias are in pots, getting all day sunshine. They are exposed to the wind as well. The leaves are limp, and turning brown, and curling. They have been potted in quality potting mix, been fed with Harry’s gardenia food and have been sprayed with eco oil for pests. They are not looking like they will survive. Are they salvageable?

Thank you for sharing your question about your gardenias. Yes, I think your gardenias are salvageable. There is still plenty of green foliage and living growth visible in the photo, so I’d concentrate on reducing the stress they are experiencing rather than adding more treatments at this stage.

The combination of all-day sun, wind and growing in pots is likely contributing significantly to the limp, curled and browned leaves. Gardenias enjoy bright light, but in a pot their root system can heat up and dry much faster than one planted in the ground. Wind increases moisture loss even further. The curled leaves and dry-looking margins in your photo are quite consistent with this type of moisture and environmental stress.

I suggest moving both pots to a sheltered position with morning sun and some protection from the strong afternoon sun and wind while they recover. Check the potting mix by pushing your finger about 3–5 cm below the surface. If it feels dry, water slowly and thoroughly until water runs freely from the drainage holes. Avoid giving small amounts of water frequently; a thorough watering followed by allowing the upper layer to begin drying is preferable. Also make sure the drainage holes are open, and the pots aren't sitting in water.

For now, I would pause the Harry's gardenia food and avoid further Eco Oil applications unless you can actually see an active pest problem. A stressed gardenia doesn't need additional feeding immediately, and oil sprays applied during warm, sunny conditions can sometimes contribute to foliage damage. Give the plants a few weeks in their more sheltered position and concentrate on consistent moisture.

You can gently remove leaves that are completely brown and trim back any obviously dried tips, but retain as much healthy green foliage as possible. Don't be concerned if the existing damaged leaves don't straighten or become green again, the important sign will be fresh, healthy new leaves appearing from the stems.

Gardenias can be surprisingly resilient. From what I can see, yours still have a worthwhile amount of healthy growth, so with protection from the afternoon heat and wind and more consistent moisture around the roots, I think they have a very reasonable opportunity to recover.
