Hello,
I'm interested in repainting an old canvas frame from black to dark brown. I think it's MDF - not sure what products I would need re sanding, priming and painting?
Thanks!
Hi @emjf13,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.
Luckily, this should be a fun, but fairly straightforward project.
I'd start by giving the existing frame a light sand with 120 grit sandpaper. You don't necessarily need to remove all of the existing finish; the aim is to remove any loose material, smooth out imperfections and dull the surface so your primer has something suitable to adhere to. Once sanded, thoroughly remove the sanding dust.
I'd then apply a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer Sealer Undercoat. It's suitable for previously painted surfaces and will give you a good base for your new colour.
Once the primer has dried, I'd use an enamel paint such as Dulux Aquanamel. An enamel is a good choice for something like a picture frame as it dries to a harder, more durable and easily cleaned finish than standard wall paint.
Before painting, if you can't remove the frame from the painting, use painter's tape to mask off the canvas and any areas you don't want painted. A small foam or short-nap roller will give you a nice smooth finish across the broader sections of the frame, while a small paint brush will help you get neatly into the corners and along the edges.
I'd apply two coats of the enamel, allowing the recommended drying time between coats. Remove your painter's tape carefully once you've finished and you should have a nice clean result.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Jacob
Hi Jacob,
Great, thanks so much! At this stage, I can't remove the canvas from the frame - is there an alternative to a spray primer that I can use?
I mentioned the spray can because it comes in a relatively small volume. There are certainly other options for primer that are not spray on, but unfortunately, they don't typically come in small sizes so you may end up with quite a bit left over.
The primer I mentioned can be purchased in a 1l tin - https://www.bunnings.com.au/zinsser-1l-white-bulls-eye-primer-undercoat-sealer-and-stain-blocker_p1579690 .
Alternatively, the https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-1l-precision-white-maximum-strength-adhesion-primer_p1400848 is a good choice for this project.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Hi Jacob - no worries, this makes sense. Thanks again for your help :)
