Garden makeover to encourage birds and butterflies

The project:

The previous elderly owners left me an overgrown 1100 sqm and after renovating the house I ran out of money for a landscaper so set about creating bird habitat and encouraging butterflies while maintaining established trees for the wildlife. It’s a work evolving. I love the garden and my dogs now are very familiar with Bunnings

- Materials:

garden soil

Potting mix

Mulch

Pavers

Organic pest spray

Fertilizer

Decking boards

Gardenia, roses, Camilla Plants

Herbs

Vegetable plants

- Tools:

Ryobi Mower

Rake

Ryobi Power post hole digger

Ryobi Blower

Ryobi Small chainsaw

Water hoses and sprinklers

All bought new as I moved from the States

- Step 1:

I hired tree arborist to cut back the huge trees
I watched the sun

I cleared small sections at a time and discovered plants struggling

I moved plants

I lifted and relayed pavers or substituted with stones

I cleared weed and made a mulched sitting area

I replaced decking

I planted a hedge

I future proofed privacy with pruning

I planted fruit trees

What a lovely approach to transforming such a large garden. Working section by section while retaining the established trees and creating habitat for birds and butterflies sounds like a very rewarding project. It's also great to hear you've been able to discover and revive plants that were already hiding amongst the overgrowth.
