The project:
What started off as a baron weed infested lawn has been turned into our own private oasis of tranquility. The lawn was never going to survive the shadows of winter so first in were Garden beds, lush with foliage, jasmine, magnolia trees and a tranquil water feature, followed by a deck to enjoy a leisurely coffee on, paving and a rock garden alive with sedum. We now have privacy and the sound of water rather than eyes looking in and traffic noise. Our own small oasis of paradise.
- Materials:
Garden Beds and Water Feature- Hardwood timber sleepers, pond liner, Aquapro pond pump and filter. Walpamur exterior paint in night sky. Stack stone cladding for the front of the water feature. Magnolias, Jasmin, ferns, bird of paradise and more plants than I can remember plus multiple bags of soil, compost and mulch. Terracotta saucer bowl planter with succulents and pebbles .
Deck - Ekodeck designer series in leatherwood. Large tall pots with Zanzibar and ribbon plants, smaller planters of greenery and kangaroo paws.
Decking and stone garden-Sandstone style large pavers with gaps filled in with fruit salad pebbles and sedum .
Fence and Gate- All framing and fixtures from bunnings and clad with castellated cladding
- Tools:
Ryobi reciprocating saw, Ozito drop saw, Ryobi hammer drill, Ryobi angle grinder, Karcher pressure cleaner.
- Step 1:
Step 1 Drew brief plans for what we wanted the area to look like. Measured up the garden beds and water feature to be built. Priced all components to complete this part of the project.
- Step 2:
Prepped the area so that garden beds and fountain be level. Cut all the timber to size and start the installing of the garden beds. When we reached the area where the water feature was being installed, we made sure that it was level and insulated to make sure pond liner was not going to get damaged. Hubby is an electrician,
so he was able to install the pump. I painted the sleepers [originally zepplin[purple] now black], while Chris installed the stackstone cladding . Then came the job of topping up the garden beds with lots of soil and compost .Then the plants and mulch. Our vision is starting to happen
- Step 3:
We had to take a small break for a few weeks as the weather was so bad and our backs had taken a beating. Next, we built the deck using ekodeck[never needing to restain again] The lawn had really taken a beating,
and we were so glad when the deck went in and our thoughts were that we woulkd never have to re seed or maintain the grass again
- Step 4:
There was another short break due to weather then we were on the home stretch. Killing of the lawn and leveling everything out ready to pave. Chris cemented the pavers in place and then we gave them a few days to settle in before laying bag after bag of fruit salad river stones down with sedum intermittently planted to soften. the end is in sight .
- Step 5:
We had used the castellated cladding on the front facade of our home in a previous reno , so decided that doing gates and a privacy fence would be the ideal complement to the work already done. Then it was down to the last paving. More killing grass, leveling and laying the paving. Our dream was complete. We couldnt be happier and have so many complements.
