The project:
A basic hydroponic system using Bunnings items. I like to exhibit at garden club shows. Hence the containers need to look like pots. For this branching stock I got grand champion pot plant.
- Materials:
Irrigation tube, 13mm for the return line.
Irrigation tube for the delivery line.
A timer for setting two minutes each two hours during the day.
A fountain pump to pump the nutrient solution.
A return container, for the pump to sit in. And to collect the nutrient solution.
the powdered nutrient solution. I use one of the chemical ones Bunnings supply. Thrive.
The grommets and t pieces, thst go in the sides of the buckets.
- Tools:
Tools include cutters, a drill suitable for drilling the holes for the 13mm holes, an inch up from the bottom of the buckets. This means dime solution remains in the brackets after a power outage.
- Step 1:
Position the containers in a platform with the collection container lower. See the pictures.
- Step 2:
These are photos mainly to show the results. I’ll add more showing the construction, if people see the results justify the efforts.
Here I used the wasted space between the shed and the fence. The white stock is toward rear of this lot. There is a collage of pictures with dates to show the growth rate. Pics taken each week.
- Step 3:
Mostly the shorter Teddy Bear sunflowers here. The bottom one is the double taller sun flower at the bottom. I removed it from the back yard to put in our porch. Our daughter has been cropped for security reasons.
Below the same idea with the pictures spaced a week apart. With the sun flower seeds, being up high isn’t enough, birds still like to pull them out. If a bird sees them being down, it will be down to scratch it out. So some sort of chicken wire or mesh. If the containers sit in the grown, slugs and alike will snack in them. People might think they are slow germinating, but it’s possible they’ve germinated and have been eaten in a few days. I’ll add some more photos in later. I need to save as I go, incase the publishing stage goes wrong.
- Step 4:
The growing media. Having some weight helps stop the plant and container being blown over. However, when they get as big as the plant in from of the brick wall above, needs more to stop it from going over.
